Ocean pressures presented in Peru

Hot, Sour and Breathless flyerThe global issue of ocean acidification will be represented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP20) by a partnership of world-leading marine research organisations and programmes, including UKOA. The ocean is under pressure from the multiple stressors of acidification, warming and deoxygenation and these issues will be highlighted at this annual international climate change conference, this year being held in Lima, Peru.

As well as exhibiting the Hot, Sour and Breathless message UKOA scientists will be participating in a number of events at the conference to raise the profile of these important issues to government officials, policymakers, environmental managers and the media.

On Wednesday 3rd December at 18:00 – 19:30 (13:00 – 14:30 EST) there will be a live webcast of the side event “What goes up in the air also goes into the sea”, organised by Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK Ocean Acidification Research Programme, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Centre for Marine Biodiversity & Conservation, University of Santo Tomas, Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies, International Atomic Energy Agency and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This series of brief talks and videos will provide actionable information for the international climate change negotiators and a Q&A session for wider audiences. Other events include a session on ocean acidifications interactions with other stressors (Friday 5th December 16:00 – 18:00 EST), and a set of talks on pathways to reduce CO2 emissions (Friday 5th December 18:00 – 20:00 EST), a seminar to introduce ocean acidification and other stressors to the public (Saturday 6th December from 10:30 to 12:30 EST) and a session on understanding the threats and reducing the impacts of ocean acidification (Saturday 6th December from 13:00 – 15:00 EST).
